AIT retrains a disorganized auditory system by strengthening the weak ear muscle called the stapedius, a branch of the facial nerve. Electronically modulated music is used to improve auditory processing disorders and sound sensitivity. AIT typically results in improved auditory processing. reduced auditory distortions and sound sensitivity. It not only benefits the ear but also the vestibular system and brain development, thus improving language comprehension, speech, academic performance and socialization skills.

Dr. Steve Porges proposed the Polyvagal Theory, a theory that links the autonomic nervous system to the emergence of social behavior. The theory provides insights into the mechanisms mediating symptoms observed in several behavioral, psychiatric, and physical disorders, including autism spectrum disorder, and provides a theoretical perspective to study and to treat stress and trauma. Similar to the works of Drs. Alfred Tomatis and Guy Berard, Dr. Porges’ research has focused on the two muscles in the middle ear–the tensor tympani and the stapedius. Porges has found that the same nerves that control these two muscles also control vocalization, facial expression, heart rate and breathing.s. Health, communication, relationships and quality of life improve.

How it is done

Randomly filtered and electronically modulated music is played through high-quality stereo headphones. The AIT protocol consists of two 30-minute sessions per day for ten days and can be repeated yearly, if necessary. Although the training is sometimes given without setting specific filters, certain frequencies that are experienced as uncomfortable may be filtered. An auditory assessment identifies hyper acute frequencies and auditory distortion whenever possible.
