I see too many kids who are smart who\u2019ve graduated, but they\u2019re not getting a job because when they were young they didn\u2019t learn any work skills,&#8221; Grandin said. &#8220;They\u2019ve got no life skills. The parent thinks, \u2018Oh, poor Tommy, he has autism so he doesn\u2019t have to learn things like shopping.&#8221;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Dr Temple Grandin, <em>The Way I See It<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The diagnosis of autism focuses on social interaction, on language acquisition and learning skills which are hard to diagnose before 24 months.<\/p>\n<p>The earliest signs of autism involve the absence of normal behaviors\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Your doctor may recommend more developmental tests if your child:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Doesn\u2019t respond with a smile or happy expression by 6 months<\/li>\n<li>Doesn\u2019t mimic sounds or facial expressions by 9 months<\/li>\n<li>Doesn\u2019t babble or coo by 12 months<\/li>\n<li>Doesn\u2019t gesture \u2014 such as point or wave \u2014 by 12 months<\/li>\n<li>Doesn\u2019t say single words by 16 months<\/li>\n<li>Doesn\u2019t say two-word phrases by 24 months<\/li>\n<li>Loses previously acquired language or social skills at any age<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;30px&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Neurosensory Dysfunction in Autism Spectrum Disorder<\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;15px&#8221;][vc_column_text]One of the main core root-causes for the repetitive patterns of behavior and the deficit in social communication in autistic individuals is the inefficient neurosensory integration. These individuals are either hyper-sensitive or hypo-sensitive as a result of confuse processing of information that cannot be interpreted well by the brain.<\/p>\n<p>Our neurodevelopmental approach addresses the need for the regularisation of the brain sensory functions.<\/p>\n<p>Tactile Pathway<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Very high pain tolerance (hypo-sensitive) for deep sense of touch: craving for deep pressure, banging into things, hitting themselves<\/li>\n<li>Hyper-sensitive to surface touch: resists being held, irritated by textures, annoyed by light touch<\/li>\n<li>Over-sensitive to temperature changes but not able to perceive either hot or cold well<\/li>\n<li>Toe walking: the child is in a \u201cflight\u201d response from a non-integrated primary reflex originating in the brainstem<\/li>\n<li>Smell distortions: either seeks strong smells, engages in disturbing behaviours when in contact with certain smells<\/li>\n<li>Mouth sensitivity: resists food based on texture and temperature, leading to limited food choices which affects their health<\/li>\n<li>Low muscle tone<\/li>\n<li>Lack of coordination<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Auditory Pathway<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hyper-sensitive to sounds: audiogram shows very good hearing but these children interpret sounds as a painful and shut down to auditory stimulation<\/li>\n<li>Not a lack of hearing BUT tonal distortion in the interpretation of auditory information<\/li>\n<li>Certain sounds may be painful<\/li>\n<li>Their hands are covering their ears or they act as if deaf<\/li>\n<li>Lack expressive communicative language<\/li>\n<li>Weak auditory sequencial processing and short term memory<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Visual Pathway<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Little to no eye contact<\/li>\n<li>Fascination with spinning wheels or mirror<\/li>\n<li>Engage in visual sensory-play by dangling objects in their peripheral visual field or does odd finger play<\/li>\n<li>Over-use their peripheral-vision (hyper-perception of edges and motion), attending to irrelevant information BUT<\/li>\n<li>Under-use their central-detail-vision<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The diagnosis of autism is usually done by a physician or by a psychologist who use the DSM-V <em>(Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition) which is the 2013 update to the American Psychiatric Association\u2019s classification and diagnostic tool.<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;30px&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>The 2 main deficits must be present:<\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;15px&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha;\">\n<li>Social\/communication deficits<\/li>\n<li>Fixated interests and repetitive patterns of behavior<\/li>\n<li>These symptoms must be present in early childhood (but may not become fully manifest until social demands exceed limited capacities).<\/li>\n<li>Symptoms together limit and impair everyday functioning.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;30px&#8221;][vc_column_text]<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1352\" src=\"https:\/\/neuroclinicbarrie.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/divider.png\" alt=\"divider\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/neuroclinicbarrie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/divider.png 662w, https:\/\/neuroclinicbarrie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/divider-600x17.png 600w, https:\/\/neuroclinicbarrie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/divider-300x9.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 662px) 100vw, 662px\" \/>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;10px&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>A Revolutionary Theory: Detecting the Earliest Signs of Autism<\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;15px&#8221;][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]By examining home videos made of infants who were diagnosed later as having autism or Asperger\u2019s syndrome, Osnat and Philip Teitebaum have found that is is possible to recognize precursors of these disorders in infants who are six to eight months of age (sometimes younger).<\/p>\n<p>They are neurodevelopmental symptoms based on early recognition of symmetrical movements: the child later diagnosed as autistic generally shows persistent asymmetrical movements.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1405&#8243;
